What is acupuncture?

Wat is acupunctuur

Acupuncture is a treatment method within Traditional Chinese Medicine. It involves inserting very thin needles into specific points on the skin to stimulate the body’s natural healing processes. This technique has existed for thousands of years and is used worldwide as a complementary or alternative therapy for a wide range of conditions.

Historical background
The earliest descriptions of acupuncture originate from ancient Chinese medical texts, such as the Huangdi Neijing (The Yellow Emperor’s Inner Classic), dating back to around 200 BCE. These writings describe the human body as a network of energy pathways known as meridians. Along these pathways are points where life energy—called qi in Chinese—is accessible. Stimulating these points with needles is believed to restore balance when the flow of energy is disrupted.

The basic principles of acupuncture

  1. Meridians
According to traditional theory, twelve primary meridians run through the body, corresponding to organs and physiological systems.

  2. Acupuncture points
There are more than 350 recognized acupuncture points, each with a specific therapeutic function.

  3. Needling technique
The practitioner selects points based on a diagnosis that may include tongue and pulse examination. Needles typically remain in place for several minutes up to half an hour.

Acupuncture combines an ancient theoretical framework with modern insights into pain physiology and neuroendocrine regulation. Although not all claims are scientifically substantiated, there is growing evidence supporting its effectiveness for various pain- and stress-related conditions.
